347 austenitic stainless steel material properties

347 stainless steel can be used to manufacture aircraft collection rings and exhaust manifolds, expansion joints and high temperature chemical process equipment.

In the forging process, 347 stainless steel has good inherent forgeability. 347 stainless steel has a higher hot strength than carbon steel, alloys, and even martensitic stainless steels, so greater forging pressure or more hammering is required to perform the forging process.

The suitable forging temperature for 347 stainless steel is between 1260-930°C, and then air cooled. In order to obtain the best corrosion resistance, the parts should be water quenched after forging or subsequently annealed and water quenched.
347 stainless steel cannot be hardened by heat treatment, in fact, the only heat treatment operation performed on it is annealing at about 1065°C followed by water quenching. This treatment provides the best corrosion resistance for 347 stainless steel forgings.
The machinability of 347 stainless steel is similar to that of most austenitic stainless steels. A chip breaker is recommended and a positive shape feed is recommended due to the alloy's rapid work hardening rate.
347 stainless steel can be welded by shielded fusion and resistance welding operations. Austenitic stainless steel welds do not harden as they cool, so the weld will exhibit good toughness. Oxyacetylene welding is not recommended because of the potential for carbon absorption in the weld area.
347 stainless steel can be welded without loss of corrosion resistance due to carbide precipitation, and stainless steel can be used in welded conditions. However, when used at high temperatures, post-weld stabilization heat treatment at 840-900°C is recommended.
