UNS S31803/2205 is a duplex grade with a ferritic-austenitic microstructure. The alloy consists of around 40-50% ferrite in the annealed condition. The duplex microstructure has the high strength of the ferritic grades whilst retaining the corrosion resistance of the austenitic grades. It is not uncommon to see the metal used as a practical solution to chloride-induced stress cracking, which is the achilles’ heel of stainless steel.
It has superior resistance to chloride pitting and crevice corrosion as compared to 317L stainless steel. The alloy has outstanding corrosion resistance to seawater and most concentrations of sulphuric acid. In addition, it is also resistant to sulphide stress corrosion cracking (sour-gas environments).
The high quality and therefore performance of UNS S32205 is widely attributed to the high levels of chromium present as well as nitrogen and molybdenum.
Duplex 2205 Stainless Steel (1.4462) corrosion resistance is superior to Grade 316 in most environments. Heat treatment of Duplex SS 2205 is solution treatment (annealing), between 1020 – 1100°C, followed by rapid cooling. 2205 Duplex Stainless Steel (2205 Duplex) cannot be hardened by heat treatment. They can, however, be work hardened. The Duplex SS (Duplex 2205) stainless steel has undergone a number of modifications resulting in S32205 (Duplex 2205). 2205 Stainless Steel (Duplex Stainless Steel) offer higher resistance to corrosion. Duplex Steel (2205 Duplex) cannot be hardened by thermal methods. The density of Duplex SS is 7.805 g/cm³. Duplex Stainless Steel (2205 Duplex) Hardness is Max 31 HRC.
Duplex 2205 Stainless Steel Microstructure
The Microstructure of Duplex 2205 Stainless Steel (1.4462) shall be examined after solution heat treatment at a minimum of 400X magnification, and verified to be free from grain boundary particles (carbides, nitrides) and intermetallic phases (sigma, chi and laves), as defined by ASTM A923 Method A. A photomicrograph (x400) can be provided if requested. Machining Duplex Stainless Steel is low due to its high strength. The cutting speeds are almost 20% lower than that of grade 304. PREN number for 22 Cr Duplex Stainless Steel is between 35-40.
Duplex 2205 Welding
Duplex 2205 stainless steel has good weldability. Duplex Stainless Steel Welding Procedure includes all standard welding processes like Shielded metal arc welding (SMAW), Gas tungsten arc welding TIG (GTAW), Gas metal arc welding MIG (GMAW), Flux-cored arc welding (FCW), Plasma arc welding (PAW), Submerged arc welding (SAW), Laser welding, Resistance welding, High-frequency welding, etc. Duplex 2205 is very hard and difficult to manufacture.

Machinability
Duplex steel plates with high-speed tools can be machined at same feeds & speeds as Alloy 316L. Cutting speeds can be decreased by around 20 percent when used with carbide machines, compared to the speeds of Alloy 316L.
Welding
A good soldability is provided by the alloy 2205 Duplex stainless steel plate. The purpose of welding 2205 is to maintain the corrosion resistance, strength and resistance of the base metal from the weld metal and the heat-affected area. The 2205 welding is not difficult, but soldering procedures need to be designed which will lead to a positive phase balance after welding and prevent precipitation of harmful intermetal or non-metallic phases.
Cold Forming
2205 duplex is quickly sheared and cold pressed on stainless steel machines. Owing to the high strength and rapid work hardness of the 2205 duplex stainless steel sheet, it needs to be coldly formed with forces considerably higher than in austenite steels. A springback allowance must also be provided due to the high power.
Heat Treatment
The stainless steel plate alloy 2205 should be heated at a minimum of 1900 ° F, followed by quick cooling, preferably with water quenching. This therapy contributes both to rectifying problems and relieving tension. The possibility of accumulation of harmful intermetal or non-metallic phases is in the case of stress relief processes at any lower temperature.
Hot Forming
It is suggested, where possible, form below 600 ° F. The workpiece should be uniformly heated and worked between 1750 and 2250 degrees F when warm forming is required. At these temperatures, Alloy 2205 stainless steel plate is very soft and ready to mould. 2205 are subject to hot tearing above this level. The austenite is considerably stronger than the ferrite, immediately below this level, and can cause cracking and a specific trouble to cold edges. Under 1700 ° F, due to the combined effect of temperature and deformation, rapid intermetallic phases can develop. When hot formation is finished, a complete solution should be followed by a minimum and fast scrub at 1900 ° F to restore phase balance, strength and resistance to corrosion. It is not necessary or recommended to relieve stress; however, if needed, the material must receive maximum solution anneal at the minimum level of 1900 ° F, followed by a fast cooling or quenching of the water.
