The relationship between nitrogen and stainless steel

Date:2023-10-27View:347Tags:
The relationship between nitrogen and steel
1. Nitrogen is sometimes used as an alloying element.
2. Nitrogen and vitriol in ordinary low alloy steel form vitriol nitride, which has the effects of grain refinement and precipitation strengthening.
3. Nitriding steel can increase the hardness, strength, wear resistance and corrosion resistance of the steel surface.

4. Nitrogen can replace part of nickel in stainless and acid-resistant steel.

What is stainless steel nitriding treatment process?
Nitriding is a process in which stainless steel workpieces are placed in nitriding gas and heated to 500~600°C to penetrate nitrogen atoms into the surface of the stainless steel workpiece to form nitrides. In order to ensure the mechanical properties of stainless steel workpieces, modulation treatment should be carried out before nitriding.
What are the characteristics of stainless steel nitriding treatment?
1. After nitriding the stainless steel workpiece, quenching is no longer required.
2. The fatigue hardness of stainless steel can be increased by 25% to 32%.
3. The low nitriding temperature results in much smaller deformation than nitriding and surface quenching. Generally, only fine grinding or grinding and polishing is required after nitriding.
4. Stainless steel workpieces have strong corrosion resistance in the atmosphere, tap water, hot steam and weak alkali solutions.

Why does stainless steel pipe welding require nitrogen?
In fact, many people have discovered that nitrogen is used during the production and welding of stainless steel pipes. Stainless steel pipes will generate high temperatures when welded during the production process. At high temperatures, the metal elements in stainless steel can easily react with oxygen in the air, causing cracks in the weld. It is also easy to crack and rust in the later stage, so adding nitrogen is to cool the internal weld of the stainless steel pipe without oxygen to ensure that the internal weld will not be oxidized by high temperature and cause corrosion and cracking. The weld bead protected by nitrogen is smooth. Neat and not easy to burst when bending, the plasticity will be stronger.
